KLANG, Aug 20 — A man and a woman linked to the death of a dog named Rocky are scheduled to appear in court today.
The man is expected to be charged before Sessions Court judge Mujib Saroji. The woman will also appear before Judge Saroji, in addition to facing separate charges before magistrate A. Karthiyayini. The specific sections and Acts under which they will be charged have not yet been confirmed, NST reported.
The case stems from an enforcement operation in Taman Teluk Gedong Indah, Port Klang, last month, during which Rocky died.
In light of the incident, Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar advised the public yesterday against holding rallies or demonstrations over the dog's death.
On Monday, lawyers Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali and Mahmud Abdul Jumaat confirmed that their client, 24-year-old Muhammad Shah Idham Nor Haikal Shaharom, had been served a summons by a Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) officer to appear in court at 9am today.
Shah has denied abusing or killing Rocky during the operation on July 29. He expressed distress over the accusations following a viral video alleging he had tortured and killed the animal, maintaining that he was at the scene solely to perform an assigned duty. Shah further claimed he has been under extreme pressure, receiving intense criticism and death threats since the incident.
His legal counsel, Rafique, stated that Shah was acting as a community representative. He alleged that Shah had received a written invitation from the Jalan Sama Gagah Rukun Tetangga in Taman Teluk Gedong Indah to assist in an official operation conducted by the Klang Royal City Council.
However, Rocky's owner recounted a different sequence of events. She claimed that upon returning home that day, she found Rocky restrained by a snare around his neck. Despite her repeated pleas to those at the scene to release the snare and her offer to hand the dog over voluntarily, she alleges her requests were refused.
The investigation intensified on Aug 2, when the DVS lodged a police report and recorded statements from several witnesses.
The DVS Animal Welfare Team filed the report after receiving the carcass of a male dog believed to be Rocky, following the circulation of a video showing several individuals tying and pulling the dog by its neck while a woman pleaded for its release.
