IPOH, Aug 14 — An unemployed man pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of robbing and causing injury to a woman last week.

Lee Koon Yew, 49, was charged with committing the offence against Fatin Fazira Ahmad Fauzi, 26, at a house in Taman Batu Gajah Perdana at 11.40 am on Aug 8.

The charge, under Section 394 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, as well as a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

Judge Norhayati Mohamad Yunus set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month, surrender his passport to the court and refrain from interfering with witnesses.

The court fixed Sept 23 for mention of the case.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Raveena proposed bail of RM20,000 with one surety.

“At the time of the incident, the victim was carrying her two-month-old baby, and the injuries sustained required her to undergo hospital treatment,” she said.

Lawyer Dhirren Amaresha, representing Lee, appealed for minimal bail, saying his client was a single father of two and suffered from high blood pressure.

On Aug 8, a 53-second video went viral on social media showing a man attempting to flee on a motorcycle after an alleged robbery.

The following day, Batu Gajah District Police Chief ACP Md Noor Aehawan Mohammad said police had arrested a man suspected of involvement in the robbery and assault at the house in Taman Batu Gajah Perdana. — Bernama
