CHENNAI, Aug 11 — A Malaysian national was detained by Indian authorities after allegedly carrying 4.033 kilogrammes of high-grade hydroponic cannabis through Chennai International Airport, India.

The arrest was made by officers from the Chennai Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) after the suspect arrived from Bangkok on Friday night, based on passenger profiling, Sinar Harian reported.

According to the authorities, the suspect was believed to have attempted to leave through the Green Channel without making any declaration to customs.

An X-ray scan of the suspect’s checked luggage detected suspicious images, prompting a detailed inspection.

The inspection uncovered four packages containing a greenish, lumpy substance with a strong and pungent odour.

The packages were believed to contain high-grade hydroponic cannabis concealed in the bottom compartment of the luggage.

The prohibited substance weighed 4,033 grammes and tested positive for cannabis or marijuana using a narcotics detection kit.

Chennai Customs seized the substance under Section 43(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.

The Malaysian suspect was subsequently detained and brought before a court before being remanded in judicial custody.

The case is now being investigated by Indian authorities to identify the network or other parties who may have been involved in the attempt to smuggle the prohibited substance.
