BANGI, Aug 10 — The 2026 PKR National Congress, to be held this week, will focus on the reform agenda, economic development and strengthening the party, said PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Selangor menteri besar said the importance of government stability and the party’s future would also be taken into consideration when making any decisions at the congress.

“So far, the motions are very clear. They concern politics, namely how to advance the reform agenda, develop the economy and strengthen the party, in addition to the president’s policy speech,” he told reporters after officiating the Human Ecology International Conference II (HEIC-II) 2026 here today.

On the party’s decision to grant Nurul Izzah Anwar temporary leave from her duties as PKR deputy president, Amirudin said it would not affect the proceedings of the congress.

“The party will certainly be affected to some extent, but we have a capable leadership team to shoulder the responsibilities, and the party has entrusted Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to carry out the duties of deputy president,” he said.

On August 6, the PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) agreed to grant Nurul Izzah temporary leave from performing her duties as the party’s deputy president, effective after the 2026 PKR National Congress until further notice.

Asked whether Nurul Izzah’s decision had surprised the party, Amirudin, who is also PKR Election Director, said speculation about the matter had been circulating among political players for quite some time.

“I think the speculation had been around for a long time among political players, and I had also heard about it. It was only brought up now, and she also has to consider the timing, and we have to respect it... there is no point forcing her when there are several personal constraints that need to be addressed,” said the Gombak Member of Parliament.

Melaka will host the 2026 PKR National Congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, for four days beginning this Thursday.
