MIRI, July 3 — A near-tragic incident involving a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle on a deteriorating logging bridge along the road to SK Long Pelutan has renewed concerns over poor road conditions in the Baram interior.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the vehicle reportedly slipped off while crossing a damaged bridge along the route linking Long Lama and Miri, a road frequently used by teachers travelling to and from SK Long Pelutan.
No teachers or schoolchildren were in the vehicle at the time.
The vehicle belonged to the family of Salyndra Anyta, who shared details of the incident on social media.
“The road conditions at the scene are extremely poor and dangerous. My father’s vehicle slipped and almost plunged into the ravine,” she told The Borneo Post.
Salyndra, who hails from Long Tepen, said the bridge had been repaired by villagers just two days before the incident.
She said that although several logging companies operate in the area, the road remains poorly maintained, making it hazardous for motorists, especially during bad weather.
“There are several other sections that are even in worse condition,” she said, adding that the deteriorating road has long disrupted access to the area and endangered road users.
The vehicle was eventually pulled to safety without injuries or further incident.
According to Salyndra, similar incidents have occurred at the same location in the past, highlighting the need for urgent intervention.
“The same problem, the same location, the same risk,” she said.
She questioned how many more incidents must occur before remedial action is taken, stressing that her concern is not about assigning blame but ensuring accountability in maintaining rural infrastructure.
“The safety of road users should be a priority, not something that only receives attention after an accident has happened,” she said.
She urged the relevant authorities to carry out immediate repair works before a more serious tragedy occurs.
At the time of writing, no official statement had been issued by the relevant authorities regarding the incident or any planned repair works.
Confirmation has also been sought on the condition of the affected road and bridge. — The Borneo Post
