PUTRAJAYA, June 8 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said existing stocks of Malaysian passports and MyKad will continue to be used despite the expiry of the previous supply contract on June 1.
He said the government would utilise all remaining stock before transitioning fully to new supplies under the latest contract.
“We will continue issuing passports and identity cards using the existing stock until it is exhausted.
“The fact that a new contract has begun does not mean we should destroy stock that is still available,” he told a press conference after the ministry’s monthly assembly here today.
Saifuddin said there was no reason to discard stock that remained usable.
He also said demand for MyKad, particularly among children reaching the age of 12, remained high, with around 35,000 applications submitted each month.
According to Saifuddin, these applications will continue to be processed using existing stock while supplies last before the new initiative is fully implemented.
The minister said the transition would be managed in a practical and cost-effective manner to avoid wastage of government resources.
On the proposed 10-year passport, Saifuddin said the initiative remained under consideration and that an announcement would be made at the appropriate time.
