KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Police are investigating claims that a 63-year-old woman detained by Nigerian authorities for allegedly attempting to smuggle 31 kilogrammes (kg) of Canadian Loud cannabis into the country had been set up by her daughter.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the claim is under investigation and efforts to trace the woman’s daughter are ongoing.

“Efforts to locate the woman’s daughter are still underway, and the allegation that she was set up by her daughter is also being investigated,” he said when contacted today.

Hussein said the Royal Malaysia Police had been informed of the arrest by Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

International media previously reported that the woman was detained by Nigerian authorities on May 17 after allegedly attempting to smuggle 31kg of Canadian Loud cannabis into the country through Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The naturalised Malaysian citizen is understood to have arrived in Nigeria on a flight from Thailand via Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). She is believed to have travelled from Malaysia to Thailand before heading to Nigeria, carrying two large suitcases containing the illicit substance.

During questioning, the woman claimed that the trip had been sponsored by her daughter and that she had stayed in Thailand for about two weeks before receiving the package for delivery to Nigeria. — Bernama
