Suspected ‘Rames Gang’ leader charged in Alor Setar court over organised crime membership

ALOR SETAR, June 2 — A man believed to be the leader of the “Rames Gang”, which is alleged to be involved in organised crime activities, was charged at the Sessions Court here today.

G. Ramesh, 37, was accused of being a member of the organised criminal group known as the “Rames Gang” in Kampung Sungai Division, Kuala Muda, between January 2024 and December 4, 2025.

The charge was brought under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between five and 20 years upon conviction.

Ramesh nodded to indicate he understood the charge when it was read before Judge Sharmila Abdul Samad. However, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Vatchira Wong Rui Fern, while the accused was represented by lawyer S. Shathish.

Previously, the media reported that the suspected gang leader was arrested under Op Tiga on May 22 following cooperation between the Indian and Thai authorities.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar was reported as saying that the suspect was arrested while on a flight from Bangkok to Hyderabad, before being brought back to Malaysia through the cooperation of authorities from both countries. — Bernama
