KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — Datuk Fahmi Fadzil told Parliament today executives from X assured it would act on complaints over lewd photos and videos generated by its built-in artificial intelligence Grok, amid concerns about the harm it poses to children and other vulnerable groups.
The assurance came following a meeting held with X representatives yesterday, where they pledged what the communication minister described as “preventive measures” that would prevent Grok from creating obscene or indecent content.
“From the meeting, X representatives confirmed that necessary preventive measures have been taken, whereby at the moment, the Grok application cannot be abused to generate anything lewd, indecent and sexual,” Fahmi said during Question Time.
“X representatives also gave their assurance to prevent the sharing of harmful online content, through its application X and Grok, and we have asked them to give us in writing all the actions they have taken officially to the MCMC, who as the regulator can assess these actions’ effectiveness,” the minister added.
On January 11, MCMC imposed a temporary restriction on access to Grok for users in Malaysia following repeated misuse of the AI to generate pornographic and sexually explicit content.
Following the move, Fahmi was reported as saying that MCMC was reviewing possible legal action against X over its AI application Grok’s failure to comply with Malaysian online safety laws.
