KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — US President Donald Trump today claimed that his administration has ended eight wars in eight months since he returned to the White House — a feat he says none of his predecessors have accomplished.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Asean Summit 2025, Trump said he has deployed “a lot of people” to resolve the conflict in Gaza.
He also appeared confident about ending the ongoing conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan too, citing his strong relations with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his army chief Asim Munir.
“On behalf of the United States, I’m proud to help settle this conflict and forge a future for this region where proud, independent nations can prosper and thrive in safety, security and peace,” Trump said, at the KL Peace Accord signing ceremony.
He also thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for convening his Thai and Cambodian counterparts here today for the peace agreement.
Trump said he frequently exchanged phone calls with the three leaders, which led to a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia in July, and the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord today.
During his address, Trump also announced that the US will be signing “a major trade deal” with Cambodia and “an important critical mineral deal” with Thailand.
The 79-year-old Republican said he enjoyed resolving conflicts — even more than playing golf — and called on the United Nations to actively spearhead similar initiatives.
“This is more fun for me than anything — saving people, saving countries — and asking them to choose the path of prosperity and peace over bloodshed and wars,” he added.
Earlier today, Anwar and Trump witnessed Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul sign the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, vowing to de-escalate months-long border tensions that have gripped the neighbouring nations.
The border conflict has killed more than 40 people on both sides and displaced some 300,000 people.
After the signing ceremony, Hun Manet thanked Anwar and Trump for their roles in facilitating the peace deal and voiced Cambodia’s support for Trump to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump has been pursuing the coveted award since returning to the White House earlier this year, with countries like Armenia, Azerbaijan and Pakistan backing his bid.
Three sitting US presidents have won the Nobel Prize — but the only Republican to win it was Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
