GEORGE TOWN, Sept 21 — A sinkhole that appeared along Burmah Road earlier today has forced the temporary closure of the road in both directions.

According to Berita Harian, Penang State Local Government Committee chairman H’ng Mooi Lye said the sinkhole was caused by a burst underground sewer pipe.

“Police and enforcement officers have redirected traffic to prevent vehicles from entering Burmah Road from either direction via Jalan Penang,” he told the Malay daily when contacted.

In a statement posted on Facebook, MBPP said the incident occurred near the Transfer Road junction.

Traffic from Penang Road heading into Burmah Road has been closed and is being diverted to Lim Chwee Leong Road. The public is advised to plan their routes accordingly and use alternative roads while repair works are carried out.
