GEORGE TOWN, Aug 29 — Penang PKR adviser Datuk Law Choo Kiang was sworn in as the Penang state legislative assembly Speaker for the third term today.

The 53-year-old has served as the state Speaker since 2013.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow proposed Law as the Speaker today and this proposal was seconded by Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid.

No other name was proposed and Law proceeded to take his oath as the Speaker.

Law thanked all the elected representatives for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the August House.

"I would also like to congratulate all of the elected assemblymen and I hope all of you will adhere to the rules and regulations of the state legislative assembly,” he said after donning his official Speaker attire and taking his place at the front of the house.

Law undertook his first task as the Speaker for this term by witnessing the swearing-in ceremony of all 40 state assemblymen.

Earlier this month, Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Chow Kon Yeow was sworn in as the chief minister for a second term after the pact's alliance with Barisan Nasional won 29 out of 40 seats in the state election.

Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo, who was previously the local government and housing state exco, was sworn in as the Penang deputy chief minister II while new Batu Maung assemblyman Prof Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid was sworn in as Penang deputy chief minister I.

The new state exco lineup, not including chief minister Chow Kon Yeow, consisted of one BN assemblyman, seven from DAP and two from PKR — with seven of them being new faces.
