KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) candidate for Lunas, Khairul Anuar Ramli will be taking legal action against several people and some publications for defamation after a video of him shoving a man went viral on social media, Malaysiakini reported today.

The Kedah PN information chief said that he will be suing them for RM10 million for defamation as the video was three-years-old and he had also been freed of any charges by the court after the incident.

"The viral video titled ‘PN’s Lunas state assembly candidate shoves elderly man’ is not accurate. The man in the video is not elderly, he is only four years older than me,” he was quoted as saying.

"I will also be suing several media publications that reported that the incident took place during the 15th general election campaigning period. That is not true.

"I will continue with the lawsuit, it’s too much! They have attacked my personality, brought down my family, and Bersatu’s dignity, and also the dignity of PN supporters,” he said.

Khairul said he was not willing to accept just an apology on the matter and was determined to sue.

The 19-second viral clip which emerged on Tuesday originated from an eight-minute-long video which shows Khairul in a verbal altercation before he moved towards a man and forcefully shoved him.

Khairul said that the clip, did not portray the entire incident and was made to put him in bad light.

"The man came to look for help but he hurled foul words towards my wife, who was present at my office in Lunas during the incident. He also wanted to enter my office with his shoes on to take away items that were for the purpose of helping the people,” he claimed.

He claimed the man was a former Bersatu member, who then became a Barisan Nasional (BN) supporter.

Khairul said it was unfair to just upload a small snippet of the entire clip which never showed the context of the altercation.

"If you want to make it viral, you can, but share the entire video. Then people can assess if I truly acted out of line by shoving an elderly man or was there provocation?

"I did not act blindly. If you want to portray it as if I shoved an elderly man, that is not true,” he said, adding that the man in the video clip was only four years older than him.

Khairul said the video went three years ago on social media and garnered up to four million views.

The man in the video had lodged a police report and Khairul was charged under Section 334 of the Penal Code for causing hurt on provocation.

"I had to go through the court trial for 18 months but on March 28 this year, the court acquitted me of the charges,” he said.

Khairul accused political rivals Pakatan Harapan-BN of spreading the clips to ruin his chances in the election but he said he was not worried at all as he was confident he would win regardless.

"I like to advise them to campaign in a mature manner. Harapan and BN are doing this in hopes to garner votes. They are politically bankrupt,” he told Malaysiakini.

Khairul is in a five-cornered fight against PH candidate Shamsul Anuar Abdullah and three other independent candidates in Lunas.
