Johor govt allocates almost RM1m for Kg Melayu Majidee storm victims

JOHOR BARU, May 11 — The Johor government has allocated almost RM1 million as assistance for 255 families in Kampung Melayu Majidee here who were affected by a storm on May 3.

Johor Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Human Resources Committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said each family received an initial sum of RM3,000 which was presented at the Kampung Melayu Majidee hall today.

He said the cash assistance was a contribution from the Johor Menteri Besar’s Office, the Johor Bahru City Council Foundation and the Johor Islamic Religious Council.

"This initial aid is given to all affected victims regardless of the level of damage to their homes,” he told a media conference after inspecting the aid handover process at the hall today.

The Larkin assemblyman said food baskets were also distributed to the victims courtesy of non-governmental organisation Southern Volunteers and the Johor Bahru parliamentary office.

Meanwhile, he said the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Social Welfare Department are still assessing the damage and losses from the storm before further aid is provided.

Once this is done, relevant agencies will be asked to provide aid to those whose homes suffered heavy damage and losses, he added.
