KULAI, April 13 — Two Indonesian convicts, who escaped but were eventually rearrested, have been remanded for four days pending an investigation into their daring bid to flee custody.
Riki Rinaldi, 40, who was arrested by a police team on Tuesday night, was remanded for four days from Wednesday until Saturday at the Magistrate’s Court here today.
The same court also allowed for second detainee, Haji Samirudin, 36, to be remanded for four days starting Thursday until Sunday.
Kulai police chief Superintendent Tok Beng Yeow said the remand orders against both men were issued by Magistrate Azureen Sahira Sauffee Afandi this morning.
"The remand order allows the police to conduct investigations into the incident,” he said in a brief reply to Malay Mail today.
Yesterday, Kulai police ended the manhunt for the two escapees after they were found in the district.
The duo were initially meant to serve a six-month prison sentence before their jailbreak.
According to police, they managed to slip out of their handcuffs before kicking open the van’s rear door in the 11.20am incident.
The convicts, who were supposed to be guarded by three Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) personnel, then ran into an oil palm plantation near Jalan Felda Inas heading towards Sengkang.
It was reported that the duo were among four people earlier arrested by the MMEA under Section 56 (1A)(a) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering the country illegally without valid travel documents.
All four had been taken to the Kota Tinggi courts where they were sentenced to six months at the satellite prison in Ledang.
