PUTRAJAYA, April 12 — Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz today said he has not been included in Selangor Umno’s plans about the upcoming state election that must be held this year.
Tengku Zafrul said he was thankful to be appointed as the party’s new Selangor treasurer and added that it was still too early for him to comment about Umno’s election plans.
"Firstly, thank you to Selangor Umno and the Umno president for trusting me with this appointment, but for now no discussions have been had with me.
"For now, Umno's leadership has asked the state information chiefs to discuss the election with the coalition party components.
"Discussions haven't reached my level yet so let's wait and see,” he told reporters when asked about his involvement in the party’s state election discussion.
Tengku Zafrul has been reported by several news outlets as a potential candidate for a state seat in Selangor.
The senator had been fielded as a Barisan Nasional (BN) parliamentary candidate for Kuala Selangor in last November’s 15th general election but lost to Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Datuk Seri Dzulkifly Ahmad.
Since then, BN and PH have agreed to team up to form the federal government under Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
Selangor, along with PH-controlled Penang, Negeri Sembilan, as well as Perikatan Nasional-led Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu, are expected to hold their state elections in the middle of this year.
Apart from Tengku Zafrul’s appointment, the Selangor Umno had announced two other new office bearers.
They are Datuk Abdul Mutalif Abdul Rahim as state Umno secretary and Datuk Mohd Zaidi Md Zain as state Umno information head.
