KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that a balanced community includes the development of businesses and culture that meets the needs of all walks of life.

"When I say we need five-star restaurants and hotels, we should also remember that street vendors and markets are just as important.

"Because not everyone can afford expensive restaurants, and it becomes the responsibility of the ones in power to provide conveniences for them.

"And these stalls need to be pleasant,” said Anwar while officiating the KL Park Festival 2023 at Titiwangsa Lake Gardens here this morning.

He added that countries have often sacrificed green spaces, as well as cultural and religious development in favour of business growth during the early stage of city planning, which has had a detrimental effect in the long term.

"We need to take a balanced approach to developing our cities, and not only focus on one aspect, such as constructing skyscrapers.

"Otherwise, we will see the inequality gap widen further, along with the emergence of other issues, such as urban congestion and slums,” he said.

Anwar then said town planning should also emphasise affordable housing.

"So, when people see the beautiful five-star hotels and restaurants, they will also see stalls run by vendors from among the underprivileged that are also clean and pleasant.

"That’s what a balanced community that accepts the principle of equilibrium is about,” he said.
