KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 — Penang’s new Opposition Leader is expected to be revealed next month during the state assembly, Bertam assemblyman Khaliq Mehtab Mohd Ishaq reportedly said.

The representative from Perikatan Nasional said that it was up to the party to propose a name as a discussion over the matter was held recently, The Star reported.

"There should be a new Opposition Leader for this coming state assembly. Sungai Dua assemblyman, who is the current opposition leader, should not hold the post as he is from Barisan Nasional,” he was quoted saying, referring to Datuk Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor.

"I believe Perikatan will send an official letter to the state assembly on this and the new leader will be announced on the first day of the next meeting,” he added.

The opposition is made up of Khaliq, Zulkifli Ibrahim (Sungai Acheh), Dr Afif Bahardin (Seberang Jaya) and Zolkifly Md Lazim (Telok Bahang), all from Bersatu, and Penaga assemblyman Mohd Yusni Mat Piah from PAS.

Muhamad Yusoff and Permatang Berangan assemblyman Nor Hafizah Othman, both from Umno, were part of the opposition until the unity government was formed last year.
