KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — PAS today congratulated its rival Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister, just a day after its Perikatan Nasional (PN) partners insisted the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leader had no "moral legitimacy” to occupy the government’s top post.

In a conciliatory statement, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said his Islamist party accepts the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s constitutional right to appoint Anwar.

"PAS is confident he will fulfil his responsibilities well and prioritise the concept of federalism to the states,” he said.

He also thanked Anwar for extending an olive branch to Perikatan Nasional (PN) to be part of his government.

"PAS thanks the prime minister for his offer to Perikatan Nasional (PN) to join his unity government and will discuss the matter with component partners in the nearest future as well as obtain feedback from our voters who enthusiastically gave their support in GE15,” he added.

PN comprises five parties: PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan Sabah Progressive Party, and Parti Solidariti Tanahairku.

In his first speech after taking his oath as prime minister yesterday, Anwar said his government will comprise members from not only PH but also former nemeses Barisan Nasional (BN), and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

He added that he is prepared to welcome others, including PN, into the "unity government” proposed by the Agong as a way forward from the hung Parliament results of last Saturday’s general election.
