KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — Following recent reports that Malaysia will get Asean first Disneyland in Melaka, we’ve reached out to Disney Parks, Experiences and Products (DPEP) for clarification. Before we hear from Disney, CNN Digital’s Asia Writer Heather Chen has managed to get in touch with their officials who have debunked the story. They told her that "it’s fake news and purely speculative”.

Unfortunately, she deleted her original tweet under the orders of Disney. However, she said her original clarification and reporting still stand. "There are no official plans for a Disney themed park in Malacca, earlier reports were purely speculative and misinformed,” she said.

The news about a mega theme park in Melaka was revealed by Melaka’s State Heritage and Culture Committee chairman, Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis during the signing ceremony of a Maglev project in Melaka. He said Disneyland and "Disney City” would be the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia with a size of 150 to 200 acres.

As we’ve highlighted, there was no official announcement from Disney and it is premature to make such an announcement without the involvement of DPEP officials. It was reported that the Disneyland project in Melaka could cost RM2 billion which is far less than the RM15-16 billion cost to build Hong Kong and Shanghai Disneyland. — SoyaCincau
