IPOH, Nov 2 — Tambun Umno chief Datuk Aminuddin Md Hanafiah, who will be the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Tambun parliament seat, said that even "giant candidates” can be defeated in elections.

Aminuddin said that many big names have lost in the previous general elections, and it is not impossible it could happen in Tambun as well.

"We admit that we are underdogs. We are aware of it. But at the same time, this is our constituency for a long time.

"So if the candidates contesting here are giants, then we are the giant killers if we win against them. We have the spirit to defeat them,” he told a press conference at the Hotel Casuarina Meru here.

Earlier, Aminuddin received the loudest cheer and applause from the BN supporters when caretaker Perak mentri besar and state BN chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad announced his candidacy for the parliamentary seat.

Aminuddin will be facing PKR president and Pakatan Harapan prime minister candidate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu for the seat.

Aminuddin said that his main objective for contesting is to serve back the community and nothing more.

"We were given the opportunity and responsibility by the party to recapture the Tambun seat. I’m a local and was born here.

"Even though we lost in 2018, we continued our service for the people here. We never took a step back and did our best to help the community here even with limited allocation,” he said.

He also pointed out that Tambun voters can differentiate the service provided with and without BN representatives.

"For the past four years nothing has been done to upgrade the education facilities here. Back then we started community libraries.

"We need to provide proper education support for the children, especially those staying outside urban area, so that it will attract them to study.

"The urbanisation in Tambun is also fast. It will bring a different polemic if not handled effectively. For example, housing price will increase, job opportunities might be limited and so on. Therefore, the people need the right representative who can tackle these issues,” he said.
