KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — Confirmed Covid-19 infections in Malaysia today breached the two million mark in overall cases since the pandemic started last year.

The Health Ministry registered 2,011,440 cumulative cases as of today.

However, the downward trend continued with 15,669 new cases registered with the Health Ministry today.

Selangor reported the highest number of new cases over the last day with 2,632 infections, followed by Sarawak with 1,983, and Johor with 1,974.

Sabah reported 1,784 new cases, Penang with 1,651, while 1,406 new cases were reported in Kelantan, almost 400 more than yesterday.

Malaysians made up the majority of cases at 14,176 individuals, while the remaining 1,493 were foreigners.

In a statement later, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah revealed that there were 1,266 individuals requiring intensive care treatment, of which 954 were confirmed Covid-19 cases and the remaining 312 under investigation.

"Of the 1,266, a total of 689 require breathing assistance,” he said.

The number of recoveries also surpassed today’s figure at 18,053 people.

On the overall cases reported, Dr Noor Hisham said 283 or 1.8 per cent were of Category 3, 4 and 5 patients.

Apart from that, another 29 new clusters were registered today — 14 were workplace clusters, 12 community clusters and three high-risk clusters — for a combined total of 1,448 active clusters to date.

Dr Noor Hisham also said the nationwide Covid-19 infectivity rate — denoted as R-naught, R0 or Rt — was at 0.98, with Sarawak the highest at 1.16, followed by Terengganu at 1.08, Johor and Perak tied at 1.02, Pahang at 1.01 and three other states of Penang, Kelantan and Perlis tied at 1.00.

All but Sabah, Kedah, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Labuan and Putrajaya surpassed that of the nationwide average.
