KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was seen entering Istana Negara here today for an audience with Yang diPertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

It was not immediately clear what the two would be discussing in the audience, which was not the typical briefing held ahead of the weekly Cabinet meetings on Wednesdays.

Since last week, Al-Sultan has been meeting with the country’s main political leaders to poll them on their view on Malaysia’s Covid-19 situation and the ongoing Emergency.

In January, Al-Sultan consented to a proclamation of Emergency that is due to expire on August 1.

Muhyiddin has since announced a special address this evening on his government’s plan for the country’s recovery.

Today’s audience also takes place before a special meeting of the Conference of Rulers tomorrow.

Malaysians have grown increasingly discontent with the handling of the country’s Covid-19 situation, which forced the country into a "total lockdown” since June 1.

While daily Covid-19 case numbers have begun to decline, new infections in Malaysia remain near levels that forced the government to implement the lockdown in the first place.

The government is also facing a growing call to both reconvene Parliament, which has been suspended since the Emergency was proclaimed, and to lift the Emergency as scheduled on August 1.
