Malaysia records over 2,000 new Covid-19 cases for fourth consecutive day, Sarawak has most infections

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — The Health Ministry has today reported 2,195 new Covid-19 infections, marking the fourth day in a row that cases have breached the 2,000 mark.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in an update said this brings the nation’s cumulative Covid-19 cases to 375,054.

"The state with the highest new Covid-19 infections is Sarawak at 508, followed by Selangor at 431 and Johor at 387,” he said.

Other states that recorded a fairly high number of new infections include Kelantan at 332, Kuala Lumpur at 176, and Sabah at 112, while Penang sees a double-digit case record at 84, said Dr Noor Hisham.

Remaining states recorded cases not higher than 50 with Putrajaya and Perlis with only three cases each.

The ministry also reported eight deaths where all are Malaysian citizens, while 219 are currently treated in the intensive care unit and 90 in need of breathing aid.

On an update regarding infection clusters, Dr Noor Hisham said there are five new infection clusters detected today.

"The clusters were detected among three workplaces, one community and one involving an education institution.

"The cumulative infection cluster number is at 1,520 with 338 active clusters and 1,182 cluster that have ended its infectious period,” he said.

Dr Hisham added that these clusters centre around areas such as Klang — among employees in a company; Shah Alam — a construction site in Cahaya Alam; Muar, Johor — workers in a factory; a community in Tarat, Serian, Sarawak; and an education centre in Tatau and Bintulu district in Sarawak.

According to the statement, infection clusters which recorded the highest number of cases are Jalan Perindustrian Satu (249), Kok Lanas (74) and Kampung Bunut Sarang Burung.
