Covid-19: Malaysia reports record high daily new cases and recoveries, at 4,275 and 4,313 respectively

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — The record for daily new cases of Covid-19 in Malaysia has been broken once again, with 4,275 cases reported today.

However, daily recoveries from the disease also reached a new high, with 4,313 people reported to have been given a clean bill of health today.

Seven more deaths due to the coronavirus were also recorded today.

The Health Ministry on its website for Covid-19 updates said active cases of Covid-19 in the country currently number 42,769; while the total number of confirmed cases in Malaysia has hit 180,455.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement revealed that 1,133 of the new cases reported today involved non-Malaysians, which made up 26.6 per cent of the total cases for the day. The remaining cases all involved Malaysians.

Only 11 cases reported today were imported.

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur recorded the most new cases among states today, with 1,421 and 548 cases respectively.

This was followed by Sabah with 498 cases, Johor with 425 cases, and Melaka with 278.

Dr Noor Hisham noted that 260 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units (ICUs), 103 of whom need respiratory assistance.

The people who died today were all Malaysian, aged between 42 and 82, with a history of illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension. Five of them were men, and the remaining two were women.

Malaysia’s death toll from the disease currently stands at 667.
