Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases stay near peak with 3,211 more infections, eight deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 ― Malaysia reported 3,211 more Covid-19 infections today or just slightly under yesterday’s record high.

According to the Health Ministry, total cumulative cases in the country were now 151,066 including 35,253 that were active and infectious.

Eight more people have also died from Covid-19, pushing the country’s death toll to 586.

Selangor, Johor and Sabah were the states with the most new cases reported with 897, 535, and 514, respectively.

"Of the new cases, five were imported through foreign infections while the transmission of Covid-19 within the country was 3,206 cases,” Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement today.

Other states that also reported infections were Kuala Lumpur (401), Penang (194), Kedah (142), Terengganu (92), Kelantan (79), Perak (74), Negri Sembilan (70), Pahang (70), Sarawak (60), Melaka (58), Putrajaya (28), and Labuan (nine).

The Health D-G said 204 patients required intensive care including 89 on ventilators.

Another 1,939 people have fully recovered and been discharged as of today, giving the country 115,227 cumulative recoveries.

The latest Covid-19 deaths occured in Selangor (four), Sabah (two), Johor, and Kedah. All but one had pre-existing health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and Meningioma.
