Covid-19: Health Ministry records new high of 260 new cases, all locally transmitted except one

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 — The Health Ministry recorded a jump to 260 new Covid-19 cases today.

All but one were locally-transmitted cases. The exception who was infected while abroad was a returnee from the United Kingdom.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Noor Hisham Abdullah said from the 259 local transmissions, 31 had travelled to Sabah recently, bringing the cases from the Borneo state since September to 119 cases.

That brings the total number of infected to 1,334 cases.

Sabah reported 118 cases today, 74 from the Laut cluster, Benteng Lahad Datu (10), Bangau-Bangau (10), 11 symptomatic cases, six infections within the community while Bakau, Joo Hwa, Sakong had one case each.

The remaining four cases came from a pre-work screening, close contact screening, pre-operative screening and one individual who was referred to hospital.

"The solitary import case was a foreigner who was travelling from the United Kingdom and infected abroad before arriving in Kuala Lumpur.

"From the 259 local infections, 130 are Malaysians while 129 are non-Malaysians. From that, 31 cases had a history of travelling to Sabah,” said Dr Noor Hisham today during his media briefing from Putrajaya.

The 98 cases in Kedah involved 88 from the new cluster reported yesterday, the Tembok cluster, involving 35 Malaysians and 53 foreigners. Five cases were due to close contact with index Case 11,212. Three were from today’s new cluster in Bah Ketil, one case came from screenings due to the individual being deemed high risk in Sabah while the last case was symptomatic.

In Kuala Lumpur there are 13 new cases of which 12 returned from a high-risk area in Sabah while the other was positive due to close contact with index Case 11,251.

In Selangor there are 13 cases, nine three were from the new Jalan Meru cluster, one was symptomatic while nine were returning from a high-risk area in Sabah.

Johor had five cases of which four came from the new Bakawali cluster and one was returning from a high-risk area in Sabah.

In Putrajaya, all five cases came from the new Selasih cluster. Meanwhile Terengganu and Perlis had two cases apiece Melaka, Pahang and Penang had one case apiece all were individuals who returned from a high-risk area in Sabah.

"Up till today there are 20 individuals in the intensive care unit with three of them needing the aid of the ventilator.

"With no deaths today the death toll stays at 136,” Dr Noor Hisham added.
