KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Corruption investigators will be applying to hold longer a deputy public prosecutor (DPP) and a private lawyer who was arrested on suspicion of taking bribes at the Kuala Kubu Baru courthouse last week after the expiry of their first five-day remand order today.

Depuy chief commissioner of operations at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Datuk Seri Azam Baki said six policemen arrested in the courthouse sting along with the two lawyers have been released.

"Our officers will process to apply for a remand order in magistrate court today for the lawyer and the DPP,’’ he said.

Azam said the police officers that were released were rank-and-file personnel, ranging from corporals to sergeants.

Those arrested were believed to have been taking bribes to secure the release of illegal immigrants held by the authorities in Kuala Kubu Baru.

It was reported that MACC officers found RM17,500 on the lawyer during his arrest. 

A search by anti-graft body of the DPP’s office at the Sessions Court in Kuala Kubu Baru also turned up a money stash totalling RM 82,000.
