KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran was named the new MIC president for the term 2018-2021 after winning the post unopposed in the party’s election today.

MIC presidential election committee chairman Datuk R. Gobalakrishnan announced the victory after Vigneswaran remained the sole nominee when nominations closed at 12pm.

The MIC’s leadership position became vacant when former MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam had confirmed he would not defend the post.

Vigneswaran, a former vice-president of the party, received support from 3,616 MIC branches out of the 4,300 branches nationwide.

"The MIC is now an opposition, so we will have a massive change in the party structure to attract the support of the Indian community especially the younger generation. 

"We will pursue the original goal of the struggle for the Indian community,” he said when met after the presidential nomination process at the MIC headquarters here. — Bernama
