PUTRAJAYA, June 27 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested today a "Datuk” of a prominent government-linked company (GLC) involved in construction for alleged misappropriation of a tender worth about RM300 million.

According to sources, the 59-year-old suspect, who is also the CEO of the GLC, was detained at the GLC in Putrajaya at around noon today.

The company is involved in more than 20 signature development projects in Putrajaya and plays a pivotal role in the overall development of Putrajaya.

"The suspect was believed to have engaged in abuse of power to manipulate the process of construction projects currently underway.

"He is also suspected of misappropriating the awards of several tenders for construction projects in Putrajaya,” the source said.

The source said the projects were awarded to another construction company via a tender process, but the contractor failed to execute the project due intentional sabotage.

Initial investigations showed the misappropriation may have been planned from the beginning, with a replacement contractor believed to have a vested interest with the suspect being asked to continue with the development.

The MACC has conducted raids at three locations within the Klang Valley to obtain relevant documents in their probe.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Azam Baki confirmed the arrest when contacted.

The suspect is to be remanded tomorrow at the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court for investigations.
