East Coast MMEA to team up on anti-smuggling, encroachment efforts

PASIR PUTEH, May 29 — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang would collaborate in implementing ‘Ops Pagar’ to curb activities of smuggling and encroachment by foreign fishermen in the country’s waters.

Its Eastern Region director, Maritime first admiral Datuk Zulkarnain Mohd Omar said the operation involving 500 personnel would be mounted one week before and one week after Aidilfitri.

"The operation to be carried out in the exclusive economic zone is to prevent foreign fishermen from fishing in the country’s waters, and smuggling of firecrackers and fireworks,” he told reporters after an MMEA breaking of fast here last night.

He said the MMEA in the three states would take turns in patrolling the waters daily including during the festive period. — Bernama
