KANGAR, May 23 — The crisis on the selection of Perlis Mentri Besar was finally resolved with the appointment and swearing-in of the candidate fixed for tomorrow at the Istana Arau.
The invitation card for Bernama which was received today, however, did not mention the name of the candidate chosen.
The crisis, which cropped up since the conclusion of the 14th General Election (GE14) on May 9, was resolved after Umno deputy president who carried out the duties of the party president, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had an audience with the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail at Istana Arau, yesterday.
Ahmad Zahid, who was accompanied by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, was believed to have been granted the audience to discuss the candidate for the post of Mentri Besar after the Ruler was believed to have rejected the three names proposed by the chairman of the Perlis Umno Liaison Body, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim on May 12.
The Ruler then directed all the 10 Barisan Nasional (BN) members of the State Legislative Assembly who won in GE14 to have an audience at Istana Arau on May 18.
Former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man also won in the Bintong state seat in GE14. — Bernama
