PETALING JAYA, May 21—Malaysian mountaineer Raman Nair Hachoodan, who conquered Mount Everest last year, has been found dead while attempting to climb another peak in the Himalaya range of Nepal.
The Himalayan Times today reported that the body of Raman, 41, was recovered by Sherpa rescuers near camp II of the 6,812 metre-high Mount Ama Dablam.
Raman’s body was reportedly found in a gorge at around 5,300m on Sunday, five days after he went missing from the 6,300m point on May 15.
The report said Raman had fell some 1,000m while returning to a lower camp with two other climbers.
The trio were heading to the lower camps after abandoning their attempt to scale the summit because of bad weather.
In the report, expedition organisers said earlier efforts to conduct ground and air searches were unsuccessful due to freakish weather conditions.
Raman’s father has reportedly arrived in the Nepal capital of Kathmandu to receive his body.
The Star Online reported that Raman’s funeral was tentatively planned for Wednesday(May 23), but would depend on the post-mortem and clearance from Nepalese authorities.
Raman successfully scaled the world’s highest-peak on May 20 last year.
