PETALING JAYA, May 12 — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today hinted that his administration is looking for a new Attorney-General.

He said the position is currently vacant.

"We are studying names and their suitability,” he said in a brief reply, when asked about the fate of the current AG, Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Dr Mahathir yesterday accused Mohamad Apandi of hiding evidence on investigations into 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s (1MDB) alleged fund misappropriation.

He also ordered an investigation into Mohamad Apandi’s conduct, adding that the movements of individuals suspected of wrongdoing in the sovereign investment fund are being restricted.

"We have placed certain restrictions on a number of people who may be involved in wrongdoings, or in making wrong decisions.

"So, at the moment, we don’t have an AG,” the 92-year-old said.

Dr Mahathir has been in high gear from the get-go after being sworn in as the seventh prime minister on Thursday night.

On his first day on the job, he announced full investigations on Mohamed Apandi, the Election Commission chairman and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief for suspected misconduct.

Dr Mahathir said his team will consult "administrators and the lawyers” to find out what it can do next in accordance with the rule of law.
