KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — The United State’s Department of State has congratulated Malaysia on the recent 14th general election, which swept Pakatan Harapan (PH) into power.

The US spokesman Heather Nauert said Malaysians from all parties, states, and backgrounds participated in a hard-fought election campaign, and engaged the electoral process in large, peaceful numbers with great enthusiasm.

"We fully expect all institutions will carry out their functions and duties to produce and implement official results in accordance with the Federal Constitution and the will of the people,” she said in a statement yesterday.

PH made history when its four component parties and others friendly to it won 135 of 222 seats in Parliament, trailed by the Barisan Nasional coalition that has been in power for six long decades. PAS, which refused to join the PH pact, limped in with 18 seats.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who retired from office after 22 years in power, made a comeback as PH chairman and was sworn in as the seventh prime minister last night.

The 92-year-old is the world’s oldest democratically elected leader.
