IPOH, May 10 — Despite only having a narrow advantage over Barisan Nasional in Perak, sources in Pakatan Harapan today said they will not be entering discussions with PAS to form a coalition state government.

While PH claimed victory earlier this morning after winning 29 seats in Perak, Barisan Nasional still pose a threat of snatching power with their 27 seats.

This is a possibility if they strike a deal with ‘kingmaker’ PAS, who won three seats in Perak.

To prevent this and consolidate their position, PH could ostensibly approach PAS — but coalition insiders say this will not happen anytime soon.

"At this point, there are no plans to enter discussions with them,” said a party source, adding there were a lot of variables at play.

"I don’t think PAS would want to risk their reputation by joining hands with BN, especially when the sentiment against BN is so obvious.”

Another insider explained that there were several possible outcomes for Perak at this point.

Firstly, he said the Yang di Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V may call for a unity government from all elected parties in parliament and force the country down a path of reconciliation between the majority and minority.

Another possibility, the source explained, was that Perak BN chairman Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir could be buying time to strike a deal with PAS.

"They may be playing hard to get, otherwise they would have already formed a government,” the source said.

"The third option is that Pakatan Harapan forms a government with the full support of the Sultan, and Parliament gets called so we can get the agenda of change underway for Malaysians.”

Currently, PH’s total is one seat short of the 30 needed to form a simple majority in Perak.

However, the coalition claimed victory early this morning after chairman Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the pact held the largest plurality of all contesting parties.

So far, Perak BN and PAS have not made any statements after the election results came in, but Zambry is expected to hold a press conference sometime today.
