KLANG, May 7 — Former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin said today that he had been cleared of corruption by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and an internal investigation by his former party, Umno.

The 80-year-old, who returned to the public eye while stumping for the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Opposition pact, was responding to a remark made by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin who cited an old statement by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in which he called Daim the nation’s "most corrupt person”.

"MACC and even Umno has cleared my name of any corruption, but what about some of them who have been found with irregularities?” he told a news conference here.

Daim named three Umno leaders as examples, but Malay Mail is withholding their identities pending their response.

Sacked from Umno last week, Daim said he believes the PH pact has a "very strong” chance of taking over Putrajaya this election, based on the massive turnout at Opposition ceramah nationwide.

"Have you seen the crowd in Melaka, Johor and Putrajaya?

"Although some media reported that only 50 people instead of 10,000 people showed up, our voters know the truth,” he said.

Daim was visiting the Klang parliamentary constituency to help campaign for PH candidates here.

He is scheduled to join other PH candidates campaigning in other parts of the Klang Valley, including Titiwangsa, later today.
