KOTA KINABALU, May 5 — Sister candidates Jannie and Jenifer Lasimbang played their native Kadazan heritage to the fullest when they broke into a song during the ceramah Perdana here today.
Jannie, a 55-year-old native rights advocate started it off and delighted the crowd that gathered at the Lintas Boulevard parking lot here when she took the stage and started off her speech with the song.
Her rendition of Adindo, a traditional Kadazan song with modified lyrics to reflect her political struggle earned the crowd’s cheers.
"It’s about Pakatan and Warisan and our hope for Sabah,” she told Malay Mail afterwards that she changed the lyrics.
Jannie, a first-timer, is the DAP candidate for Kapayan.
Her younger sister, 44-year-old Jenifer, who took the flatbed stage after Jannie said she also wanted to sing.
"Sabah kita ubah... Sabah kita punya... ,” she sang, telling the raucous crowd that it was the anthem she sang to keep her election machinery’s spirits up when they were on the campaign trail.
"I had a very personal journey during the 10 hours of walking to the villages here. Our team of 14 were feeling low as we walked through the rivers and shrubs.
"Singing the song kept our spirits up,” she said
The crowd of some 5,000 sang along with her and commiserated when she talked about her 10-hour journey into the remote villagers of Moyog where is she canvassing for votes for Parti Warisan Sabah.
"Moyog is a constituency close to Sabah but yet it’s people have been neglected. It has beautiful rivers and fertile land but it isn’t being used to its full potential,” she claimed.
Former Suhakam commissioner Jannie will be contesting the Kapayan state seat on a DAP ticket, while Jennifer will vie for the Moyog state seat on a PKR ticket but running under the Parti Warisan Sabah logo.
