KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) chief Tan Sri Noh Omar claimed that an Election Commission (EC) official abused his authority by cutting him off mid-speech during a ministerial event in Kuala Selangor.

The incumbent Tanjung Karang MP, who is defending his seat in GE14, claimed he was interrupted by the EC agent who accused him of breaking election rules by delivering a speeh at a ceramah without a permit while at the Kuala Selangor fire station with BN’s candidates for Kuala Selangor, Datuk Seri Irmohizam Ibrahim and Bukit Melawati, Jakiran Jacomah, Sinar Harian reported today.

"I attended the ceremony because the ministry had previously approved an allocation of RM1.2 million to repair the lifts in that housing area.

"So while I was in the middle of a speech, that agent asked me to stop for allegedly not following the rules… even asked me to show the permit for the ceramah when the permit does not apply during election campaigns,” the caretaker urban wellbeing, housing and local government minister was quoted as saying.

According to Sinar Harian, Noh was officiating an event organised by the joint management body of a gated housing area, when the EC’s agent disrupted his speech and a broadcast speech of BN chairman, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Noh reportedly said the EC agent should not abuse his power during the general election, adding that he had responded to the EC agent based on the law and that the latter was shamed when local residents chased him away for entering without permission.

Noh said the EC agent should not engage in politics and that it would be better for the latter to resign so as to not tarnish the commission’s name.

He said EC agents have "to bear the responsibilities and trust that they are given correctly, and not wilfully show” their powers.
