IPOH, May 4 — With five days left to polling for the 14th general election, PKR has been making a killing selling a little blue plushie measuring just 20cm high.

Sales for Adil the rhinoceros has been extremely brisk in the Perak state capital, priced at RM26 each and a pair costing RM50.

Teja PKR campaigner Eric Lee said the party had ordered 500 units to be sold at its ceramahs here starting from Nomination Day, last Saturday, which marks the official start of the campaigning period.

"We have managed to sell about 250 since then,” he told Malay Mail today.

Lee said the mascot was introduced to the people during the Sarawak state elections in 2016 as part of PKR’s fundraising effort.

He explained that the party chose a rhinoceros as its mascot because the animal was in danger of becoming extinct.

"Besides, it is also an animal that is full of energy,” he added.

Adil’s DAP counterpart is a hornbill plushie named Ubah, which made its first appearance during the 2011 Sarawak state election.

The DAP mascot symbolised change. To the DAP, the hornbill characterised hardiness and represented the unity of Malaysians east and west of the South China Sea.

The bird was reused in the 13th general election.
