KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Setiawangsa residents can expect more government funds to be injected into the area’s 28 Parent-Teacher Associations, public housing upgrades, including the creation of "gated communities”, and free health checks if Barisan Nasional (BN) retains the federal seat in the May 9 polls.

The BN candidate Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique who is making a return to the seat he won in 2004 and 2008 said the measures were among eight initiatives he would take to strengthen the spirit of community in the constituency.

"Setiawangsa is like a large family. The grassroots here are given a platform to form different committees where they could meet and address the issues within the community to be brought up to the top leadership.

"It is a bottom-up approach here and we would like to continue this effort and improve it further,” Zulhasnan told reporters at his operations centre here.

He added that the committees include issues on infrastructure, education, religion, and health.

The "gated community” initiative is to improve security.

Zulhasnan also took a dig at his election rivals from Pakatan Harapan (PH) who have been challenging him to declare his assets.

He said the asset declaration exercise was not a requirement by the Election Commission but BN candidates had all agreed to be vetted by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

"When we register as a candidate, there is no requirement to declare your assets. BN candidates have been vetted by MACC. I am surprised PKR candidates have refused to be vetted by MACC.

"It is their right to challenge but the rule of law does not require for me do declare my assets. Can I ask them why they did not let MACC vet their candidates?” he asked.

Last November, thirty PH candidates pledged to sign contracts with PKR-linked Invoke to declare their assets for the 14th general election, including PKR’s Setiawangsa contender Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Setiawangsa has been in BN control since Election 2004 after it was carved out as a separate federal seat from Wangsa Maju in the 2003 redelineation exercise.

Zulhasnan will be battling PKR’s incumbent Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Ubaid Abd Akla from PAS on May 9.
