17 injured in four-vehicle collision

NIBONG TEBAL, April 30 — Seventeen people were injured in an accident involving four vehicles at Km148.6 of the North-South Expressway, near Bukit Tambun here, today.

The incident at 8.30am involved two cars, a Thai van and a trailer.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said 14 of those injured were Thai nationals, with the remaining three, locals.

"All of them were sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital and given outpatient treatment,” he said.

Meanwhile, Thai van driver Amin Bahin, 33, when met at the Seberang Jaya Hospital, said the group was heading from Kuala Lumpur to Pattani, Thailand, when the incident occurred.

"The road was congested at the time...our van was hit by a trailer from behind, causing me to hit the car in front. There was another car behind the trailer which tried to avoid the collision, but it skidded into the drain instead,” he said.

Amin said he and 13 passengers of the van, comprising 11 men and two women, were employed at food stalls around Kuala Lumpur and Tanjung Malim, and were on their way home to Pattani. — Bernama
