Maria, who has not joined any political party and is using PKR’s logo, is contesting in the relatively safe seat that has been held by PKR for two terms.
The former chairman of polls watchdog Bersih 2.0 will be going up against Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Datuk Chew Hian Tat and PAS’s Noraini Hussin.
The Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat in Selangor currently has 140,920 registered voters.
MCA’s Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai had won the seat in Election 2004 with a huge majority of 21,416 vote, while PKR’s Hee Loy Sian had wrested the seat — then known as Petaling Jaya Selatan —away in 2008 with a 5,706 vote majority and retained the seat in 2013 with a 19,216 vote majority.
The Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat encompasses the three state seats of Bukit Gasing, Seri Setia and Taman Medan that were all won by the federal opposition in the previous elections.
All three state seats will also involve multi-corner fights.
DAP’s Rajiv Rishyakaran was nominated using a PKR ticket and will be defending the Bukit Gasing state seat, which he won in 2013 with a whopping majority of 15,842 majority.
He will be contesting in a three-corner fight against BN’s Chai Ko Thing and PAS’s David Sew Kah Heng.
PKR’s Prof Shaharuddin Badaruddin will be contesting the Seri Setia seat, which PKR’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad had won in 2013 the second time with a comfortable majority of 4,663, improving on his 2,863 vote majority in 2008.
He will be facing up against BN’s Datuk Yusoff HM Haniff, PAS’s Mohd Ghazali Daud and independent candidate Vigneswaran T. Subramaniam in a four-corner fight for the Seri Setia seat.
PKR’s Syamsul Firdaus Mohamed Supri will be contesting in the Taman Medan seat, which PKR’s Haniza Mohd Talha had won twice in 2008 and 2013 with a vote majority of 4,433 and 3,731 votes respectively.
He will be going up against BN’s Abdul Mutalif Abd Rahim and PAS’s Ariffin Mahaiyuddin in a three-corner night.
None of the candidates for the PJ federal seat and the three state seats were rejected at the end of the nomination.
