KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — Opposition party PKR’s failure to resolve and finalise its list of candidates for the 14th general election (GE14) is "unforgivable”, activist Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said today.

Ambiga, a prominent lawyer who is also a former Malaysian Bar president, had taken to Twitter to criticise PKR’s actions.

"When the rakyat are doing everything in their power to overcome obstacles to ensure they can vote and to help in the elections, this nonsense in PKR is unforgivable!” she said in a tweet today.

Earlier she had written on Twitter: "With great power comes great responsibility. Statesmanlike leadership is imperative.”

Ambiga had also prior to that retweeted Jay Jay Denis’s comment: "Two years ago, I wrote a piece asking Pakatan @pakatanharapan_ to name their GE14 candidates to allow the important groundwork to be done. Yet, despite nomination day approaching fast this weekend, not all candidates have been announced. When, @drwanazizah?”

News portal Malaysiakini reported Ambiga as saying that it was disappointing that PKR was engaged in a public dispute over its internal problems.

"I am certain that the other parties have their own share of problems but they somehow manage to hold it together for the sake of the people.

"PKR stands out in not being able to do that,” she was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

"Not a single candidate from PKR has been announced, thus depriving them of valuable time with their constituents,” she added.

According to Malaysiakini, the crisis within PKR over its candidate selection is speculated to be linked to two separate factions led by its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and vice president Rafizi Ramli.

Yesterday, PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang said he would be fine if the party decides not to field him to defend his Batu federal seat, but urged the party leadership against placing candidates at the last minute to "accommodate certain factions” and lobbying.

Yesterday, The Star Online reported that PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had allegedly rejected up to eight names put forward by Azmin as GE14 candidates, including Chua.

New Straits Times yesterday reported Azmin as saying that PKR’s candidate selection panel has almost completed the GE14 candidate list, asserting that he did not submit any list of proposed candidates.

Azmin reportedly said the party divisions would submit the list of proposed candidates to the party’s state leadership, which would then vet and submit it to the selection panel.

The panel is composed of Dr Wan Azizah, Azmin, Chua and PKR vice president Dr Xavier Jeyakumar, the party’s election director, women chief and youth chief, NST said.

Nomination day for GE14 has been fixed on this Saturday, while polling day will be 11 days later on May 9.
