KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 ― Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and DAP are set to clash over the Cameron Highlands seat that Barisan Nasional rivals MIC and MyPPP are also fighting over.
PSM announced today that Cameron Highlands branch secretary B. Suresh will contest the seat that DAP’s M. Manogaran will likely challenge for in the general election.
PSM central committee member S. Arutchelvan urged Pakatan Harapan to yield the seat to his party, saying it has worked hard in the area and was confident of victory.
"In the 2013 election, we were asked by the then Pakatan Rakyat to give way for DAP to contest there, which we did; however, when they asked us to do the same this time we refused as they had lost in the last elections,” he said.
He said PSM has championed various issues in the area, including farmers rights, housing problems, youth employment, local council elections and more.
Arutchelvan also said his party would not back down on Cameron Highlands, saying it will work to win the seat even if the contest ends up to be multi-cornered.
However, he repeated his call for PH to make way for the larger good.
"In the event of a three corner fight in Cameron Highlands, it is akin of PH giving away the seat to BN,’’ he said.
In 2013, then MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel won by a razor thin majority of 462 votes against Manogaran in a five-way contest.
Arutchelvan then said his party will also contest Sungai Siput that is currently held by its Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj.
