KANOWIT, April 19 ― Kanowit police have apprehended a man believed to be an Indonesian who attacked a senior citizen couple in Ngemah about 29km from here on Tuesday.

The arrest was made when a Kanowit CID team led by Insp. Chris Olsen Ramlee stumbled upon an illegal van driven by a 65-year-old from Rantau Ensurai at a location in Jalan Kanowit-Ngungun at 6.50am.

Upon inspection of the passengers, police found one of them was the 21-year-old suspect from Dusun Tamang Sagang, Tri Kembang, Kecamatan Galing, Sambas, Indonesia. 

Kanowit police chief DSP Daniel Benjamin who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect admitted to carrying out the attack on a couple who were his employers as he was unhappy not getting paid after working for a week.          

The suspect who also did not possess any valid travel documents would be investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon.

In the incident, the suspect slashed the couple with a sharp weapon causing the 63-year-old man to be injured on the left cheek to the neck and sustained three slash wounds on the head, left arm and he also lost both the ring and little fingers. 

His wife, 67, suffered a slash on the right cheek to the back as well as slash wounds on right ear and left hand.

The suspect later escaped by the back door before disappearing. ― Bernama
