Brit student in Johor offers to chug vodka, eat fish heads for airfare home

PETALING JAYA, April 18 — While Malaysians attempt to raise cash to fly home for the general election through initiatives such as #PulangMengundi, a British student in Johor is on a desperate solo mission of her own.

Briton Charlotte Duff, 21, is doing all it takes to raise £692 (RM3,850) for a ticket home to Newcastle, UK and has launched a JustGiving page to support her efforts.

"I’m studying abroad in Johor which is crackin’, got a good tan and tings,” she wrote on the fundraising site.

"However, I have a problem… the social life here is a bit lacking compared to the love of my liver, Newcastle.”

Duff said that she wanted to fly home for a "massive party” with family and friends before she has to return to Malaysia for tests.

To reach her target, she has undertaken a series of challenges as incentive for followers to donate to her.

For example, if she hits the £200 (RM1,110) milestone, Duff has vowed to eat 20 Malaysian snails.

"If £500 is raised, I will eat a full durian (if you don’t know what this is google it),” she added.

That might be considered a treat for some.

"I made a comment about how I wished I could go and from that it escalated into a JustGiving page and a list of horrific challenges being created,” Duff told UK news portal The Sun.

"I came up with a long list of stupid things and then fine ranked them based on how awful they were.

"It’s also important for me to see my family and stock up on coco rocks! It’s my favourite cereal but unfortunately you can’t buy it out here.”

At the time of writing, 24 supporters have raised £310 of the target.

The tasks completed so far have been relatively tame — eating a plate of fish heads and making a watermelon helmet.

As the money pours in, the 19 challenges, of which she has accomplished six, are set to get a whole lot worse.

"I’m least looking forward to drinking quarter of a litre of vodka from a sock that I’ve worn for 24 hours and ran a mile in for sure,” she said.

The final two include eating five packets of spicy noodles right before flying home and wearing an inflatable sumo suit for the 12-hour journey.

Duff claims she will return all donations if she misses her target, adding that she hopes to reach the end goal soon in case flight prices go up.
