PETALING JAYA, April 12 — Nik Omar Nik Aziz, son of former PAS head and Kelantan MB Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, is set to contest under the banner of Amanah, according to a source close to the party’s leadership.

Nik Omar, who is Nik Abduh’s eldest brother, has been rumoured to contest under the Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) ticket. However, which seat he will be vying for is still anyone’s guess.

The source told Malay Mail’s sister publication ProjekMMO that he was "100 per cent confident” that Nik Omar would contest under the party’s ticket and that it was only a question of whether he would contest a parliamentary or a state seat.

"We are confident Nik Omar will not let down the people of Kelantan,” said the source.

"His struggle is a mirror image of the struggle of the late tok guru (a moniker for the late Nik Aziz). We want his legacy in Kelantan.”

The source added that Nik Omar "loved Pakatan Harapan (PH) more than his own children” and was not against Chinese majority DAP.

Additionally, the source revealed that Nik Omar had been offered the Pengkalan Chepa parliamentary seat or one of three state assembly seats — Panchor, Chempaka or Kijang.

All four seats were won by PAS in the 2013 general elections.

"If he is to contest in any of those seats, Insya-Allah he will win because of the aura of tok guru. He has no weaknesses in politics.”

The sentiment in Kelantan is for Nik Omar to either contest in his father’s traditional stronghold in Chempaka or even in Kijang.

PAS had previously taken Kijang with a majority of 5,143, while Nik Aziz had retained his seat with a majority of over 6,000 before his passing.

Meanwhile Nik Omar’s mother, Tuan Sabariah Tuan Ishak, is said to have not given him her blessing.

"Previously, Nik Aziz refused to allow any of his children besides Nik Abduh to participate in politics. But now tok guru is gone,” the source said.

Nik Omar, the source claimed, had never been a member of PAS and when the party splintered, he refrained from joining Amanah.

On being asked if Nik Omar could be a possible candidate for MB if the Amanah swept to power in the state, the source said "let’s win first, then we can talk (about the position).”

The source also said Nik Omar would be ready to face his brother in Chempaka if he were to contest against him.

"But we do not know where he (Nik Abduh) will contest. We have heard no news on where he will contest at this point.”

Nik Abduh, who is seen as a reliable supporter of PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, first won the Pasir Mas parliamentary seat in 2013 with a majority if 8,047.
