KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 — AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes today announced fixed domestic flight rates to accommodate passengers travelling to cast votes in the 14th general election.

"Fares to Sarawak on the 8th and 9th will be RM120, to Sabah RM199 while to West Malaysia RM 99.

"We will freeze whatever seats we have not sold for the day before and day after and put those seats on low fares. And put extra flights. Should be out by Monday,” he tweeted.

He added that Air Asia flight price from Johor Baru would follow the same pricing as from Kuala Lumpur.

The rates, however, only apply for one-way tickets.

Fernandes said that AirAsia would use its AirAsiaX 330 planes, a wide-body plane, for the purpose.

"Revenue team working overtime to get this done. Say thanks to them,” he posted.

Last week, AirAsia announced waivers on flight change fees only for air tickets scheduled for the May 9 polling day.

However, it allowed customers to alter their travel dates up to a month from original date of departure, or opt to convert the purchased ticket into points using the airline’s loyalty programme.

Two days ago, the Malaysian Aviation Group also announced that it would waive flight change fees for bookings on May 9.

The parent company of Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and MASwings said in a statement that the decision was made to allow Malaysians to fulfil their responsibility as voters.

It said the waiver would apply to all types of tickets for travel dates between May 8 and 10, inbound or outbound.

"Only one change is permitted and it must be done within 10 days from today,” read the statement.

The company explained that passengers are allowed to reschedule their travel dates up to two months from original date of departure, and are subject to seasonal surcharges.
