Fahmi Reza raises RM30,000 in just 18 hours to pay court fine

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 ― Political activist Fahmi Reza has managed to raise RM30,000 in less than a day to pay off a court fine, after he was found guilty for posting a clown sketch of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

In a post on his Facebook profile, Fahmi said he had raised a total of RM32,724, of which RM22,095 were crowdfunded and RM10,629 were deposited by random donors to his banking account.

"I did not expect to achieve this target so soon. I am speechless… not sure what to say, except THANK YOU,” he posted at about 3pm, today.

As at press time, the crowdfunded figure stood at RM28,311, according to the website Pozible.Fahmi had targeted a total collection of RM46,800 to cover the cost of the crowdfunding as well.

On the crowdfunding site, users can choose to pay from as little as RM1 to RM1,000 in return for merchandise designed by him. So far two people have chosen the most expensive RM1,000 option.

The graphic artist was slapped with a RM30,000 fine and one-year jail term for the said offence at the Ipoh Sessions court three days ago.

Fahmi was charged for uploading false communication content on his Facebook page with the intention to offend other parties on February 8, 2016.

His lawyer, Syahredzan Johan however said that they will appeal against the decision.
